The Department of Art Van Crews Jr. Scholarship
Eligibility
- Any student enrolled in the University of Maryland Department of Art who has declared a commitment to pursue a concentration in design and has demonstrated his/her abilities by receiving a grade of ŇBÓ or higher in any of the following courses: ARTT 100, 110, 200, 210 (or the equivalent in cases of transfer credit) or any of the other courses in the design concentration.
- The applicant must be officially enrolled in one of the following design courses: ARTT 350, 351, 352, 354, 458 or 459.
- The amount of the scholarship will vary from year to year; it will be in the range of last yearŐs award, which was approximately $3,000.00.
- The current Van Crews Scholar can reapply for the scholarship in any subsequent year and will be considered provided that he/she continues to meet the selection criteria.
- The selection is competitive at all levels.
Application dates:
- A portfolio and essay are due May 1, (or the following Monday, if May 1 falls on a weekend) in the Department of Art office, not postmarked May 1. The portfolio and essay may be submitted in person or sent by mail (with a self-addressed stamped envelope for return) to the Department of Art, Room 1211E Art/Sociology Building, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742-1311.
- Portfolios and essays will be juried no later than May 10.
- Applicants will be notified, by mail only, in mid-June.
Selection criteria:
Each applicant must submit:
- An official transcript proving a minimum overall 3.0 GPA and a 3.5 GPA in art/design course(s).
- A portfolio of 8-12 samples of work executed in courses taken in the Department of Art (or other school) and other pertinent personal or professional work, if applicable. Samples may include both two- and three-dimensional work which is to be presented in the form of slides or photographs. These portfolios will be juried by faculty teaching in the design area.
- A 250-word, typewritten essay on one of the following topics:
- a. ApplicantŐs professional design interests and aspirations
- b. The role of design in contemporary global society
- c. The relationship of design to fine arts
- d. Design as a communications tool.
- Proof of registration in an upper-level design course, as a Studio Art major, for the following semester.
- All of the above must be submitted by May 1 (or the following Monday, if May 1 falls on a weekend), to the Department of Art. Award announcements will be made in mid-June
