The Department of Art in conjunction with the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the African Diaspora will offer The Stephanie E. Pogue Memorial Award to an Art Major with a minimum of Junior standing, who is in need of financial assistance and whose work exemplifies the artistic aspirations and achievements of Stephanie Page.

Professor Pogue was an African American artist and printmaker. She graduated from Howard University, Washington, DC, with a BFA in painting in 1966 and then received her MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield, Michigan, in 1968. She joined the faculty at Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee, where she became Associate Professor, Chair, and Gallery Director of the Department of Art at the University of Maryland and was a faculty member from 1981 to 2002. During her tenure at the University she taught printmaking and drawing and developed a papermaking facility. From 1991 to 1993 she was Chair of the Department of Art from 1993 to 1998.

An accomplished artist, Professor Pogue received two Fulbright-Hayes Fellowships and exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Her works reside in prominent private and public collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem. She will be remembered for her contributions to the field of printmaking, her mentoring of students and junior faculty, and her compassion for humankind.

The terms of the Stephanie E. Pogue Memorial Award will require that the recipient maintain a minimum of 12 credits per semester at the College Park Campus, remain in good academic standing (3.0 or better in the major), and remain enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park, for the full year covered by the award. In addition, the recipient must demonstrate a continued pursuit of his or her major in Art by taking a minimum of one art course per semester.

If the award is granted in the Junior Year, there will be a possibility of renewal for a second year.

Interested students will submit an application and portfolio late in the spring semester and will be notified of the final decision over the summer.

Designation of the Award is the responsibility of the Department of Art. Parties interested in contributing to the Stephanie E. Pogue Memorial Award fund should make checks payable to: University of Maryland College Park Foundation with a note of designation to the Stephanie E. Pogue Memorial Award.
