Ruth Lozner was born in Baltimore and grew up in the local area. She received her BFA in painting and drawing from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. She continued her studies in fine arts, later receiving an MFA from American University in Washington, DC.

Her career as a fine artist, designer/illustrator, art educator and artistsŐ rights advocate has spanned nearly 25 years. Before Maryland, Ms. Lozner held faculty positions at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, VA, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she was chair of the Illustration Department for six years, and Parsons Schools of Design in New York City. She has had group and one-person shows of her paintings and illustrations throughout the US, as well as abroad including Japan and England. Her active freelance illustration work has been published in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Atlantic Monthly, Good Housekeeping, Newsday, Illustration: Japan, American Express Travel and Leisure, Sports Afield, and CBS Records.

Ms. Lozner is the author of the book on the popular illustration medium, Scratchboard for Illustration, published by Watson-Guptill. She has been an active member, officer and lobbyist for the national artistsŐ union and the Graphic Artists Guild.
