John McCarty was born in Washington, D.C. in 1940. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in 1968. He is currently an Associate Professor in sculpture at the University of Maryland, where he has taught since 1990. McCarty is represented by Baumgartner Galleries in Washington, DC and C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore.

His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the U.S.and abroad, including Amerikahaus in Berlin, the Phillips Collection, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Virginia Museum, Duke University, Duquesne University and others. He has executed public commissions in the U.S. and in Ghana, West Africa.

McCarty has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. His work has been reviewed in a number of publications, including Art News, Art International, Sculpture magazine, Museum & Arts, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, The Christian Science Monitor, and Der Tagesspiegel.
