Fabio Fabiano

Fabio Fabiano was born Città di Castello (Umbria). He studied Arhitecture at the University of Florence (Italy), and Industrial Design at Syracuse University in New York. He began his professional career in architecture and urban planning in Tunisia, and soon became interested in industrial and interior design, two disciplines that he practiced in Canada (Montreal), in Italy (Milano), and in the US. He designed several interiors for banks,showrooms, retail stores, and offices. In the field of industrial design, he has created many products, ranging from consumer electronics to telecommunication equipment, office accessories, lighting fixtures, houseware, and furniture. In the last decade his work concentrated mostly in furniture design, both institutional and residential, for manufacturers in the U.S. and Italy.
Besides his professional practice, he was continually involved in design research and teaching at the University of Montreal, Ohio State University, and the University of Texas at Arlington. He has served as a professor of design at the University of Maryland since 1987. He is the author of many articles on design, and has lectured at design congresses and universities worldwide. His work is published in several international design and architecture magazines.
In April 1997 Fabio Fabiano presented five new designs for seating for three Italian manufacturers at the Milan International Furniture Exhibition. This is a reference event in the design field. He also produced a variety of new, sculptural designs for accessories and furniture in tempered glass, presently under development in Italy.
In the US he is currently consulting with Images of America (N.C.),producing new designs for contract lounge seating, and furniture for public spaces. He also designs glass and metal furniture and accessories for JRW, in San Francisco.
In April 1996 four of his new designs appeared at the Milan International Furniture Exhibition. In the summer of the same year, he exhibited design work at ÒFurniture Insight/RealizationÓ a group exhibition at the Harmony Hall Regional Center, Ft. Washington, Maryland.
In fall 1995 he collaborated with the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, D.C. in the organization of a cycle of lectures on Italian design. In October and November at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, he lectured on this subject. His work was exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. and at the Art Department of the Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire.
He is the US correspondent for two design magazines from Italy.
