The Electronic Media Center is a cutting-edge facility serving the digital media needs of students, staff, and faculty of the Department of Art within the University of Maryland. The Lab gives students access to advanced software and hardware allowing them to complete projects in image manipulation, DVD authoring, video editing, web design, sound production, interactive work, and video installation. Courses taught in the lab focus not only on the technical skills necessary to create work digitally, but also look to give students the conceptual and formal knowledge to make work that is contemporary, compelling, and relevant.

A large assortment of peripheral hardware is also made available to students for use in the completion of projects: video cameras, audio recording equipment, digital cameras, sensor equipment, and various other tools are available for checkout by students, staff and faculty to facilitate the completion of digital artwork. The following courses are taught in the EMC on a regular basis:

ARTT354 - Elements of Computer Graphics

This intermediate course surves as a survey of digital media; students gain experience in the practices of Image Manipulation, Video and Sound editing and production, Web Design(HTML), and Digital Illustration.

ARTT489i - Advanced DIgital Imaging

Advanced Digital Imaging focuses on advanced techniques in the creation of rich interactive web environments using the actionscript language in Macromedia Flash, as well as the creation of interactive projects using Macromedia Director, and DVD Studio Pro.

ARTT489k - Advanced Special Topics in Digital Interactive Practices

In this course, students focus on giving a physical presence to work created digitally. Students create various video installations using MAX/MSP/Jitter and sensor equpiment to create environments in which the video and sound in the space react and change based on the actions and movements of the viewer within the space.
