The Nancy Clarvit Design Scholarship
The Nancy Clarvit Design Scholarship provides funds to students in two categories: Students who have achieved a high degree of merit in the Design program and students who have achieved a high degree of merit in the Design program AND require additional financial assistance to complete their college education. Art Studio students may apply after they have been accepted into the Design Concentration. The 2008-2009 Nancy Clarvit Design Scholarship recipients are Heather McCarthy, Michael O'Brien, Erika Ohno, Sahar Rasolee, and Melissa Rothstein. The next application round for the Nancy Clarvit Design Scholarship fund will provide $15,000 in scholarships to Design students for the 2009-2010 school year. $10,000 be awarded to students based on merit. $5,000 will be awarded to students based merit and financial need. Qualifying students may apply to both designations of the scholarship if they wish but need only to submit one application.
Eligibility:
Applicants for the Nancy Clarvit Design Scholarship must be Art Studio Majors who have been accepted into the Design Concentration. The student must be of Junior Standing (minimum of 60 credits completed) and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (overall) and 3.5 (in Art coursework).
How To Apply:
Applications, which are due the beginning of April, must include the following:
- 1. Completed Scholarship Application form with signature; Forms are available in the Department of Art office.
- 2. A digital portfolio of 12-15 samples of design work executed in courses taken in the Department of Art (or other school) and other pertinent personal or professional work, if applicable. Images may be submitted via a burned Macintosh-compatible CD or DVD. Create a folder with your full name on the disc within which to store your files. Digital files must be clear, in focus and of ample resolution; must be saved in JPG format; must not exceed 5 MB; and must be named using the student's full name (i.e., Barnes_Laura_01.jpg). Any time-based files must be saved as a .mov file. If submitting websites, include contained files that do not require an internet connection. Include a printed document which lists the name, title, medium, dimensions or running time, and date of each work as well as a small size visual (roughly 20x20) representing each piece.
- 3. A signed, dated and typed essay (500 to 1,000 words) that describes the applicant's interest in a Design career within a socio-cultural context. More specifically, what are your career interests as a graphic design and how will those interests intersect with your community and the world?
- 4. Official transcripts, which may be included with the application or sent directly to the Department of Art (Attention: Clarvit Design Scholarship) prior to the application deadline.
The Department of Art Van Crews Scholarship:
The Department of Art Van Crews Jr. Scholarship is designated for a student who as been admitted into the Design concentration or has declared a commitment to pursue a concentration in design. The amount of the scholarship will vary from year to year; last yearŐs award was approximately $3,000. The current Van Crews Scholar can reapply for the scholarship in any subsequent year and will be considered provided that he/she continues to meet the selection criteria. The selection is competitive.
Applicants to the Van Crews Jr. Scholarship meet the following requirements:
- 1. The applicant must be a student enrolled in the University of Maryland Department of Art who has declared a commitment to pursue a concentration in design and has demonstrated his/her abilities by receiving a grade of B or higher in the following courses: ARTT 100, 110, 200, 210 (or the equivalent in cases of transfer credit) or any of the other courses in the design concentration.
- 2. The applicant must be officially enrolled in one of the following design courses: ARTT 350, 351, 352, 354, 458 or 459.
- 3. A minimum overall 3.0 GPA and a 3.5 GPA in art/design course(s).
Applications, which are due May 1 (or the following Monday if May 1 falls on a weekend), must include the following:
- 1. Completed Scholarship Application form with signature; Forms are available in the Department of Art office.
- 2. A signed, dated and typed essay (500-word minimum) on one of the following topics: a. Applicants professional design interests and aspirations b. The role of design in contemporary global society c. The relationship of design to fine arts d. Design as a communications tool.
- 3. Proof of registration in an upper-level design course, as a Studio Art major, for the following semester.
- 4. Official transcripts, which may be included with the application or sent directly to the Department of Art (Attention: Van Crews Jr. Scholarship) prior to the application deadline.
- 5. A portfolio of 8-12 samples of design work executed in courses taken in the Department of Art (or other school) and other pertinent personal or professional work, if applicable.
Artwork should be organized and presented neatly and clearly in a portfolio folder or binder. Your name should be on the outside of the portfolio and on each work. Neatly label each piece with the name, title, medium, dimensions and creation date. Pieces that do not fit into a standard art portfolio (such as large-scale paintings or 3D works) should be submitted as photographic or laser prints. All charcoal and pastel submissions must be spray fixed.
Images may be submitted via a burned Macintosh-compatible CD or DVD. Create a folder with your full name on the disc within which to store your files.
